Date/Time: May 21st @1pm
Topic/Skill: Speaking skills - Presentation (Group 2/3)
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Rios began class with discussing the specific elements of a presentation as a review. They had already done vocal presentations the week before. This presentation would be in a different field and would utilize powerpoint though. Next, he gave a short presentation on the definition of subcultures or co-cultures. He used pictures and also provided examples such as Hippies and the Amish. He made sure that each student realized that the USA has many more cultures within its more generally recognized ones.
Classroom Management: Dr. Rios assigned presentation topics to students and offered help as they discovered some introductory information about their new topics.
Materials: PowerPoint and canvas submission pages.
Student Participation: Students picked presentation topics and then began some introductory research on their topics. As they filled out question forms on canvas, the new questions would direct their research.
Feedback Provided: The teacher provided detailed feedback on their answers and made sure each student was keeping up with the others on their research and findings. Dr. Rios also made sure that each student had a topic that they were happy with and understood.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I really liked how Dr. Rios assigned topics. He used a random name ordering program online to decide which students got to pick first. He provided enough topics so that each student had a chance even after many of the others were taken. I also like that he made sure each student understood that the USA contains many kinds of subcultures. I had never considered before that foreigners could easily believe that the USA has one homogeneous culture. This exercise was great as it had a cultural and interactional element, as well as was designed to greatly improve their speaking and research in a foreign language. I also liked that Dr. Rios played popular American music during the class. That provided a nice atmosphere for me.
