Alessandro TS #20  Date/Time: June 22st, Saturday, 4:00PM Location: Zoom/facetime Topic/Skill:  listening, speaking, writing,  Feedback provided to the tutee: This session was my final session with Miguel. We again reviewed some of the things he had learned that same week and instead of worksheets we mostly just talked about the things I suggested he improve on as it was our last session. We also discussed our future as friends and acquaintances as he will still be in the school once I return from Korea so I would still be willing to help him. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This final session was very bittersweet. I learned a lot from Miguel in such a short amount of time. I sympathized with his early frustrations with learning a new language as I faced the same problem when I immigrated to the United States. Miguel's growth and desire to learn was very inspiring and I respect so much about him. I know in the future we will still speak and I ...

Alessandro TS #19 Date/Time: June 21st, Friday, 7:00PM Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: reading, listening, speaking, writing, composition  Feedback provided to the tutee: This session was with Miguel. It was a very all-encompassing and integrated lesson as we focused on all the things he had been learning. The first part of the session was focused on just correcting some of the errors in the things he learned and the second part was very focused on some worksheets online we did together and correction.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This session taught me a valuable lesson about tutoring as whole and how addressing the students needs is key to improvement. Miguel wanted to focus on specific things with the lesson so we addressed those and reception was good.

Alessandro TS #18 Date/Time: June 13th, Thursday, 7:00PM Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading, Listening Feedback provided to the tutee: This session was with Rosario. This was our last session before the TOEFL exam for Rosario. I mostly reassured him and refocused on the things he struggled with before. Corrected him on prior errors in passages. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Confidence is incredibly important. All of the CIES students and TOEFL are incredibly hardworking students and very capable. I think for students learning English seriously the confidence to mess up and try and try again is so very important. They have the skills and tools they just need to use them.

Alessandro TS #17 Date/Time: June 10th, Sunday, 4:00PM Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Vocabulary, Speaking Feedback provided to the tutee: This session was with Miguel. We mostly just went over his graduation to the level 2 course and how his week went. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: One big thing me and Miguel went over is certain ways he can improve and how he was grasping new content and what specifically he wanted to work on. The lesson I learned from this was how students often need a hard plan to stay on task and improve. Planning is important as well as evaluating their previous work for positive washback.

Alessandro TS #16 Date/Time: June 10th, Monday, 6:00PM Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Listening, Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: This session was with Rosario. We discussed the upcoming goals for the TOEFL and how he had been doing with the independent practice exercises.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This session was mostly about recapping some knowledge with Rosario, making sure he was keeping up with exercises, and overall just showing improvement as his TOEFL test was coming up quite soon. A lesson I learned is the need to hammer in certain concepts to students and make sure they are still following through with teachings even when you are not around as the tutor.

Alessandro TS#15

Alessandro TS #15 Date/Time: June 8th, Saturday, 4:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Speaking and listening Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my fifth session with Miguel. After the graduation we had a session the following day where we discussed his time in Tallahassee and the cultural differences of being in America compared to his native country of Cuba. This session was more geared towards cultural understanding and was a very impromptu and casual lesson. Feedback was mostly just corrections of speech and pronunciation, as well as cultural corrections.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This session was extremely insightful in reaffirming the need for students learning English to have cultural understanding of the US and the cultures in it.

Alessandro TS#14

Alessandro TS #14 Date/Time: June 7th, Friday, 4:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Speaking and listening Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my fourth session with Miguel. We had a big gap in between our sessions due to my schedule at the time and how overwhelmed I was with a lot of what I was doing, this session was mostly focused on catching up on missed time so we just worked on conversation and listening skills. I focused on just correcting words he struggled with and things of that nature. This session was an interesting section in particular because it was the graduation of a lot of CIES students and was Miguel's graduation to level 2 in the CIES course. We mostly just talked and he asked for certain corrections. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This was my favorite session with Miguel and really helped in establishing a deep connection with my tutee. It really taught me that connecting with your student and tutee in a personal life is ...

Alessandro TS #13 Date/Time: June 2nd, Sunday, 4:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading  Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my tenth session with Rosario. At this point our sessions had a set routine of going over previous excersies he did at some point in the week and then maybe going over a new passage and answering some questions.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: A lesson I learned within this session was the cultivation of routine and how essential it is for positive washback and for students to maintain knowledge.

Alessandro TS#12

Alessandro TS #12 Date/Time: June 1st, Saturday, 4:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my ninth session with Rosario. This time we worked on a passage together and this time it was fully timed to better his handling of time limits on the actual test.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This session taught me more about student's struggles with passing the TESL. A big struggle of the TESL is finding the balance between answering the questions and reading passages while handling the time aspect of it.

Alessandro TS#11

Alessandro TS #11 Date/Time: May 30th, Thursday, 8:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Listening and Speaking Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my eighth session with Rosario and probably one of my favorites. I had observed his previous classes for my classroom observations and wrote down some comments to discuss it.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The key lesson about tutoring I learned here is the encouragement of students. Rosario did not speak a lot in class discussions for speaking or listening. I encouraged him to participate more in class to improve his speaking skills and improve conversation and listening skills by participating. He has a lot to say but would not speak often in class.

Alessandro TS#10

Alessandro TS #10 Date/Time: May 29th, Wednesday, 6:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading Feedback provided to the tutee: Seventh session with Rosario. This was more focused on passage reviews and the questions in them. This was a shorter session where we just went over the passages he did independently at home and reviewed them. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This just reaffirmed that ESL students need to be constantly practicing at home and take time to review their answers as to whether they could be wrong or right.

Alessandro TS #9

Alessandro TS #9 Date/Time: May 28th, Tuesday, 8:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Listening Feedback provided to the tutee: Sixth session with Rosario. We focused on listening but less an academic sense and more in a personal sense. It was mainly conversation about our backgrounds and who we were as people as well as speaking about his classes and how he does in them.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Through this session,  I reaffirmed a lesson learned in Professor Kim's class: conversation is essential in bettering and understanding language. I could tell that speaking with me Rosario was getting better at understanding different speech rates and styles of speaking. It helped greatly in adjusting and getting used to differences of that nature.

Alessandro TS#8

Alessandro TS #8 Date/Time: May 27th, Monday, 6:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading Feedback provided to the tutee: Fifth session with Rosario. This session just involved solo practices he was doing on smaller passages. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I encouraged Rosario to do smaller exercises throughout the week, almost daily to improve overall comprehension and see how he would do. It worked in some ways. I realized that repetition is key to establishing important behaviors.

Alessandro TS#7

Alessandro TS #7 Date/Time: May 26th Sunday, 3:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my fourth session with Rosario. We went over multiple passages and just reviewed the questions and mishaps.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Rosario had improved in a lot of ways through our sessions but one thing I learned is how well he picked up vocabulary and answered vocabulary questions. He was very knowledgeable about those.

Alessandro TS#6

Alessandro TS #6 Date/Time: May 19th Sunday, 4:00PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Listening  Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my third session with Rosario. We shifted gears and focused on some practice exercises for listening on the TEFL examination courses. He went over some listening and answered some questions and I corrected him on the incorrect answers.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: One thing I learned throughout this session focused on listening is how important speaking rate is to them understanding certain conversations and lessons as well as vocabulary.

Alessandro TS#5

Alessandro TS #5 Date/Time: May 18th Saturday  Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Reading Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my second session with Rosario. We established what he was focused on learning for the TEFL course and began with reading passages and answering questions Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: One thing I learned from this tutoring session is how the TEFL course is very tricky in terms of questions. It doesn't necessarily grade for the student knowing things, its a test and they test you on test taking.

Alessandro TS#4

Alessandro TS#4 Date/Time: May 17th Friday Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Introduction, Reading, Listening  Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my first Session with Rosario. The session was mostly focused on learning what he wanted to improve on and his goals with the tutoring.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Some lessons I learned from Rosario from the first session were the goal focus that a lot of students have when it comes to learning English. Many of the students strive toward a goal and want to improve to achieve that goal. I learned this with discussions with other students in CIES as well

Alessandro TS#3

Alessandro TS #3 Date/Time: May 8th Wednesday  Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Speaking and listening  Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my third session with Miguel. We went over certain vocabulary as well as pronunciation and such.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: A lesson I very much learned from this third session was codeswitching a little bit. If you are well versed in the student's first language, it is incredibly helpful to them and to you to occasionally switch and explain concepts or ideas to them. This betters overall language skills and will help students understand better.

Alessandro TS #2

Alessandro TS #2 Date/Time: May 7th Tuesday 8 PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: All, reading, listening, speaking   Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my second section with Miguel. It was focused more on speaking and listening as we used a lot of conversation to better and improve certain aspects, a lot of correction on speech was involved. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Again the initial frustrations that come with a learning a language at times. Miguel is very expressive on how frustrated he gets at some of the language issues.

Alessandro TS #1

Alessandro TS #1 Date/Time: May 6th Monday, 6:00 PM Location: In Person Topic/Skill: Introduction and understanding  Feedback provided to the tutee: This was my first Session with Miguel. The session was mostly focused on learning a little about him and seeing the style he wanted to learn at.  Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned and still continue to learn so much from Miguel. He is very intelligent, incredibly skilled and knowledgeable. One main thing I learned from him is the struggle that a lot of CIES students face at first. An initial frustration and not seeming to understand the subject or not being able to improve and feeling frustrated that they cannot communicate how they feel in English.

Kareef TS #20

Date/Time: June 20th Thursday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Grammar, must/have to. Feedback provided to the tutee: Continued to work through must/have to/ mustn't etc as I feel last session Faisal didn't quite grasp it all. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that you must ask the students constantly if they understand what you are telling them. After recapping our previous session I felt that Faisal didn't quite grasp some concepts that I had just assumed that he had because he did not ask any questions about them. When working with a beginner student it is on you, the teacher, to make sure that they understand everything you are telling them. After our final lesson, I sent Faisal an email with all the material we worked on and he sent me back a message thanking me for teaching him. Overall, this TEFL course was an amazing experience and one I will truly, never forget. Thank you to everyone. See you in Japan!!!

Kareef TS#19

Date/Time: June 18th Tuesday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Grammar, modal verbs must/have to. Feedback provided to the tutee: Slowly went through a video about the modal verbs must/have to and how to use them in the proper context. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that when working with a beginner student it is very important that they understand all the words surrounding the grammar point that you are trying to teach. Without the students understanding the full context of an example sentence they can't possibly understand the grammar point you're trying to teach them. With Faisal, I realized this quickly and slowly made sure he understood every example sentence used in the videos regarding must and have to.

Kareef TS #18

Date/Time: June 19th Wednesday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: reading comprehension  Feedback provided to the tutee: Read our final article this time about something very topical, Juneteenth. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: For the first time ever Dojun was late for our lesson! This was very surprising as he is a shockingly punctual person. He will literally press the join meeting button the second the clock hits 10AM. I thought it was a bit funny that he was late for our final lesson and we laughed about it together. He however was very apologetic constantly saying sorry for being late. I thought he was very sincere and together we have built a wonderful understanding of one another that I will miss. I quite enjoy working with one student for an extended period, it really allows you to optimize and best understand how to treat that person's needs to the best of your abilities.

Kareef TS #17

Date/Time: June 17th Monday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: reading comprehension  Feedback provided to the tutee: Read an article about D-day. Lesson(s)  about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Continued my streak of topical articles this time reading one about the Allied power's invasion of Normandy to free the French from Nazi occupation. I am getting better at learning which articles suit Dojun best for his English level. My goal is to pick articles that have challenging words or ones that can be a bit difficult to comprehend for non-native speakers. Difficult to comprehend due to cultural differences as well as the advanced level of English that is being used.

Kareef TS #16

Date/Time: June 11th Tuesday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Listening comprehension Feedback provided to the tutee: Faisal and I went over more A1 listening comprehension videos that I found on YouTube. There were question-and-answer segments as well so he really had to test his basic listening skills. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I think it is important to provide the beginner tutee with confidence-building material. As beginner material is inherently more boring than advanced ones, I feel that keeping the beginner student motivated is a major part of being an English teacher. Beginners can learn far more quickly than the advanced student so as long as their motivation to learn is kept high they can reach that intermediate level relatively quickly. I learned this from really sitting down and thinking about the differences between teaching Dojun and Faisal, how they react to different teaching methods, and for Dojun specifically how he reacts to different article...

Kareef TS #15

Date/Time: June 12th Wednesday Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: reading comprehension and listening comprehension Feedback provided to the tutee: Provided correction when asked on both speaking and reading comprehension. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: For my tutoring sessions this week I was in Chicago at a conference with my mother. I had to do them both from my hotel room but this didn't really have any impact on my lessons. Because I was in Chicago, I used a topical article about the WNBA and race relations between some of their new rookie players. I've decided that topical articles when they relate to you or your tutee are best as they generate more interest and conversation which in turn leads to more English language learning.
